Behind the Bar: Duckhorn Portfolio Wine

Duckhorn Vineyards has been named one of the “Top 100 Wineries” in the world eleven times by Wine & Spirits

In 1976, Dan and Margaret Duckhorn founded Duckhorn Vineyards, establishing it as one of the first 40 wineries in Napa Valley. At a time when California wine was still defining its modern identity, the Duckhorns made a radical and highly calculated decision: they wagered the future of their estate on Merlot.

While the rest of Napa Valley was heavily prioritizing Cabernet Sauvignon, Dan Duckhorn fell in love with the softness, approachable texture, and food-friendly complexity of the Merlot grapes he encountered in Bordeaux. By launching their inaugural 1978 vintage with a premium, vineyard-designated Merlot from the now-legendary Three Palms Vineyard, Duckhorn fundamentally reshaped American viticulture. They proved that Merlot could stand confidently on the global stage as a standalone luxury varietal of immense structure and longevity.

The Evolution of North America’s Premier Luxury Portfolio

Over the last five decades, that initial, uncompromising pursuit of quality has expanded far beyond the borders of St. Helena. Today, the Duckhorn Portfolio represents a masterful curation of North America’s most revered terroirs, spanning multiple distinct winemaking facilities and iconic estate properties.

Rather than diluting the parent brand, Duckhorn expanded by acquiring and developing hyper-focused, site-specific labels:

  • Duckhorn Vineyards: The original bedrock of the legacy, continuing to set the global standard for Napa Valley Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and elegant Sauvignon Blanc.

  • Decoy: Developed to bring the signature refinement and blending precision of the estate into an approachable, versatile, and everyday luxury format.

  • Calera: A true pioneer in cool-climate winemaking, utilizing the unique limestone soils of Mt. Harlan to craft deeply complex, Old World-style Pinot Noir.

  • Kosta Browne: A cult-status icon that maintains an obsessive following for its intensely flavorful, critically acclaimed Pinot Noirs and Chardonnards sourced from California's finest coastal appellations.
